Tautuku
Tautuku Outdoor Education Centre is situated in the William King Scenic Reserve, adjacent to the Tautuku beach on the Catlins coast. Tautuku Camp is the first of 2 camps operated by the Otago Youth Adventure Trust.
As we are located on Department of Conservation land No Animals are allowed on site.

Tautuku camp provides accommodation for up to 100 people in dormitories and associated cabins. Facilities include abseiling, kayaking, climbing wall, confidence course, initiative course and a wide range of tramping tracks.

ACCOMMODATION

Mattresses provided, NO pillows.
You will need to bring bedding.
  • Lion's Den
    The "Lions Den" is our latest improvement at Tautuku, it was completed in 2023. This can be hired in addition to the main complex, however it can't be hired out by itself. Please contact the Warden for further details.

You will need to bring a First Aid Kit
  • Kitchen
    A spacious, modern kitchen is available for use, with electric stoves, microwave, multiple toaster, modern sterilizer
    and an instant hot water dispenser.

    All cooking equipment, utensils, crockery and cutlery are supplied.

    An adjacent pantry provides a storage area for food and there is a large fridge and a large freezer for cold storage.

    You will need to bring:
    · All food requirements
    · Detergent, tea towels
    · All cleaning materials (Disinfectants, cloths and toilet paper)
    · Rubbish bags

    The nearest store is the Owaka Four Square

    Buckets, brooms and mops provided.
    Remember to bring toilet paper!
    This is not supplied on the camp site.
  • Dining room/hall
    A double server connects the kitchen and the dining room/hall.

    In the dining room there are:
    • Nine long tables
    • 18 long stools
    • A map of the local area

    The hall has the following facilities:
    • Open fire
    • Piano
    • Clothes drying racks
    • Bookcase
    • Shipwreck information
    • Historical information

    Deck
    Outside the dining room/hall there is a covered deck

    Firewood for the fire is $30.00 per night
  • Showers & Toilets
    There are modern female and male hand basins, showers, and toilets.

    There is an ample supply of hot water
  • Sick Bay
    One bed is available for use in the sick bay and a trolley stretcher.

  • Laundry
    2 tubs for rinsing with manual wringers. There is also a modern washing machine is available for use (Contact the warden)

    Drying rooms:
    There are 2 rooms with multiple racks for drying clothes.

ACTIVITIES

Some of the activities cost to use.
You will need to arrange this in advance.
  • Abseiling
    An abseiling wall is located in a nearby quarry.

    Requires:
    · Own equipment and ropes
    Certified instructors are required
  • Flying Fox
    There is a great flying fox near the cabins.

    Adult supervision is required. One person at a time permitted to ride on the cable.
  • Confidence Course
    This is located in the bush near to the camp.

    • 25 obstacles allow for a two hour session
    • Not suitable for children under seven

    Requires:
    • Harness to be used on some activities
    • Adult supervision
    Currently the confidence s having maintenance carried out, please check with the Warden to confirm its availability.
  • Climbing Walls
    Varied difficulty climbing wall.

    Your own equipment and ropes are required.
  • Initiative Course
    Six different problem-solving items designed to test people’s ability to work as a team of 10 to 12.

    Allow 2 hours.
  • Kayaking
    12 kayaks with life jackets, wet suits, paddles and trailer are provided.

    Suitable locations for kayaking are:

    · Papatowai Estuary
    · Flemming River Jetty

  • Tramping
    There are tracks starting at the camp ranging from one hour to one day. The Warden can provide an area map and information about tramps.
  • Campouts
    A camp out area on site is available, please discuss this with the Warden.

    Equipment available:
    · 5 tents that sleep 5 people
    · Camp out equipment
  • Solo
    Leave students alone in the bush to sit in one place by themselves to experience isolation.

Over the past 32 seasons over 19,000 people have successfully completed a variety of trips led by The Otago Youth Adventure Trust and Milton Rotary Tramping Club throughout Otago and Southland.
